PEEVED AT EVE
Was driving along today and decided to turn on the radio, which is a rare thing for me cos I prefer to play my own music so I know exactly what to expect. So anyway, was listening to the radio and Implication by 2Face came on. Apart from it's catchy beat, it also has a somewhat clever chorus. Translated from Idoma (the tribe in Benue State that ISN'T tiv) it literally says, "she ate, she ate, she gave her husband to eat..." basically talking about Adam and Eve as the ultimate illustration of Implication (you know, as in Eve implicated Adam, etc).
You know the song, you love the song, but it got me musing.
Why are we always so quick to condemn poor eve?
Just what did we expect her to do?
Bear with me a while, let me make a point here.
Eve was the first woman. Lovely, nuturing, maternal, caring, selfless woman. She wasn't the one whom God gave the instruction about the 'forbidden fruit' (which has NEVER been described as an APPLE, by the way, in any Bible I've seen). It was MAN who had been given that charge, and it was he who passed it on to the wife. Having said that, you could argue that the bottom line is that she knew, but then so did the man, but that isn't where I'm going with this. Be patient.
As I was saying, she only knew what her husband had told her, and any woman knows her man isn't ALWAYS right (right girls?) so for argument's sake, we could excuse her for believing that the man may have been slightly mistaken in his 'don't touch' philosophy, and since she wasn't actually there, was more susceptible to the serpent's silver tongue. But still, that isn't where I'm going. We're almost there, I promise.
Bottom line, Eve ate the fruit. She didn't 'die'. She then gave it to Adam. Adam ate it (without being forced, I might add). We've had beef with her since.
So, why are we beefing her? For eating the fruit? No. We beef her cos she gave it to Adam. At least we guys do. But why are we beefing her? She was only being a woman, a lovely, nuturing, maternal, caring, selfless woman. She had been convinced that the fruit was good, she then ate it first herself, just in case, to make sure it wouldn't harm the man. Then, after discovering it's eye-opening 'benefits', she lovingly, nuturingly, maternally, caringly and selflessly decided to share this great 'gift' with her husband. See?
She wasn't being wicked, she was being generous. She was being selfless.
She was being a woman, a lovely, nuturing, maternal, caring, selfless woman.
If it was some of my Naija brothers I'm sure they would have hidden this 'asset' so the woman's eye's won't 'tear' and she won't be tempted to 'try him'. As insecure as anything.
So, instead of vilifying her, we should be praising her for being so loving, nuturing, maternal, caring and selfless. (tired of that yet?)
Blaming the woman for the fruit that you knowingly and willingly put into your mouth, and needed no help in chewing, is akin to the monsters that blame rape on a womans clothing, or blame battery on a womans mouth. But that's a whole other musing...
In my opinion, the next time we hear 2Face lamenting our implication, or read of the fall of man in Genesis 2: 15- 3:24, don't get peeved with Eve, just smile a sad, knowing smile, and remember that she is woman, loving, nuturing....(say it with me...)
